city. New Haven | CT

commissioner: WCGM

A mixed media exhibit of stories exploring the landscape of justice, education and community from across Connecticut.

Even before opening its doors 25 years ago, the mission and work of the William Casper Graustein Memorial Fund was being shaped by stories. To celebrate this marking of a quarter century twe invited story sharing in the form of writing, video, and poetry.

The Memorial Fund created essential space to reflect internally on our own story, and also create space for others by hosting 6 celebratory regional events around the state. There we heard remarkable truth-tellers share powerful stories concerning equity in education, racial and economic equity, liberation work and community building. We Sang together broke bread together, and celebrated together.

Storyscape was a montage of audio interviews, video interviews, poetry, written story and portraits. This exhibit was comprised of selections from 8 months of story gathering.

Literary Happy Hour 2016-2019

Literary Happy Hour was a reading and performance series curated by and host by Hanifa Nayo Washington that created a radically inclusive performance space and creative community that gave rise to healing, liberation, deepening of self and genuine community building. Each event focused on a different theme and featured 3 artists, whose performances were followed by an open mic.

Literary Happy Hour provides a platform for New Haven writers to present their work, build a local following, and form a supportive, collaborative writing community. Uniting the strongest writers from disconnected corners of the New Haven community – including creative writing students, open mic performers, and independent writers – Literary Happy Hour emphasized writers of color and other writers belonging to marginalized groups.
